Mindset… where to begin…

So Ross and I have been having a discussion almost monthly now about me giving a mindset seminar to the RT Crew…

I’ve been dubious because whilst I’m more than happy and comfortable to stand and discuss mindset it could be one of those topics that goes from a 1 hour to a 1 day event.

I also raised the point that mindset can go quite deep… I’m not talking the guilt you feel when pouching a full packet of biscuits here, I’m talking where you’re head is at on a daily basis which can either have favourable or detrimental effects to your everyday life, not just your fitness journey…

So, I decided to put pen to paper and start framing the various things I’d like to share and figured I might as well start at the beginning…

I think one of the key elements of mindset (a persons way of thinking and their opinions) is language… the language you hear, the language you use, your inner voice…

From being young, and I’ve discovered this only recently with being involved in Ross boys lives, we have words thrown at us for EVERYTHING… and some of you parents out there may disagree with this… but it’s always “too dangerous” “you’re too young” “you’re not big enough” “you can’t” “you’ll hurt yourself” … Most of the times these words are used out of protection and just common sense but I really think we need to address the negative… all of these words are negative and in a child’s mind they can either crumble with it and become fearful of life to the point where they actually stop being kids… or, they do it anyways which is although painful sometimes actually quite cool as they’re showing that they’ve got a can do and will do attitude!

We go to school and there’s always that one absolute twat of a teacher who tells you you’ll never amount to anything… I’ve a couple in my head just from my days at school, one of whom I’ve not had the pleasure to come across since and another who got accidentally swilled with a pint when I worked as a waitress… it was accidental but I can’t help but think Karma had something to do with it…

So then here we are as adults… we often, although many suffer quietly, have this fear of not being good enough, fear of pain, fear of not being able to do it… the negative cant’s, won’t’s and don’t’s come into play…

I’m not gonna sit here and say I never have these as I do… but more recently I’ve allowed myself and actually tried to just re-program my thought process… if I think I can’t, I switch it in my head and tell myself I can…

Many of you don’t start what you want to because you’re scared. You’re scared you won’t be good enough, won’t be able to do it…

So I’m challenging you all… start telling yourself you can… start small and keep it rolling…

After all… like Henry Ford said… if you think you can, or you think you can’t… you’re right…
