There’s something I’ve learned over the years and that’s never to be distracted by the flying Frisbee. I’ve seen it literally break people.
What do I mean by Flying Frisbee?
It’s the “next big thing”, the latest “cash cow”, the latest “diet trend”, the latest gym class, the latest Social Media Fad… These Frisbees are flying about all over the shop and you’ve got a choice, you either jump up and catch it as a reflex full of excitement, like a puppy… Or you let it go over your head, glance back over your shoulder as the wiser, older pup thinking yeah… that’s not for me, I’m all good where I’m at…
You either need to master the art and establish exactly what the value is in what you’re doing whether it be in business, in training, in your nutrition, etc., if you’re currently jumping around from one thing to the next, stop…. Just stop. Some people hop from one thing to the next to keep their life “exciting”, a new “thrill”, something to focus on when all else seems mundane, when you do the same things day in day out. Well guess what… those “boring” things that you tend to do day in day out when you find what you’re good at and what works, these are the things that create a better future… a better business, a better mindset, a better body… When you focus on “something new” chances are you’re neglecting something that was already working for you and once that happens it’s a steep road back…
A guy I know, I won’t mention any names, has been in practically every industry you can think of. Having been approached by people who simply needed some funding to start a new venture he found himself drawn in by sales pitch after sales pitch… The sales master got well and truly schooled, he fell for the dangling carrot, he bit the worm… He neglected not only his “cash cow” business which had been going for 15+ years, paying the mortgage, the cars, the holidays, the extravagant lifestyle he had become accustomed to… He neglected his team who’d been with him through thick and thin from day one… who’d supported everything he had ever done even when it meant following him down a path to redundancy and lost jobs, he neglected those that were loyal and by his side… He lost, everything.
I regularly talk to people who’ve tried every diet under the sun, they’ve been to Zumba, Clubbercise, that one where you wave glow sticks about and they’ve lost some weight… but they’ve done a few classes a week for a few weeks then their Sally has joined up somewhere where they do this New thing and it sounds proper fun and she’s already lost 6 pounds so they’ll give that a go… then Zumba just falls by the way side… wor Sally has now joined a newer more exciting thing that her Jean was talking about and suddenly they don’t want to go by themselves, they’ll go back to Zumba next week instead… but they won’t…
I’m not averse to risk or change, don’t get me wrong, when there is an opportunity in front of you you should always consider taking it, but only when it’s an opportunity you are ready to fully immerse yourself in, understand the what’s and why for’s… Only then will you find that the opportunity presented will be fruitful. If you are distracted in any way or jumping between various things but never really sticking out any of them consistently, you end up being the jack of all trades and master of none.
Think about it…
