Why is the root cause never addressed…
I generally leave the ranting to Dan as he’s far more eloquent at making a point… BUT… what is the problem with humanity these days, all days, always in the sense that we almost ALWAYS go for the easy option.
We plaster over the problem like it’s no ones business. I’ll even admit I fall into the same trap at times, an example being my migraines… I sought out many an answer, had my bite adjusted by my dentist, had a gum shield to stop me from grinding my teeth as I slept, I cut out coffee, chocolate, cheese… I did this after being given nothing but pills from my GP, try this one, try that one… oh here, have these beta blockers!!!
I was so infuriated by this approach from the GP I sought out an answer for the cause for myself and for a long time my migraines settled down, until lately… I have been knocking back pain killers like there’s no tomorrow despite the fact I know this is a fundamentally flawed approach and Ross has been giving me a load of grief… why… water… it’s such a simple task to ensure I drink enough water but because I, like everyone, am human and have a tendency to be a bit of a dick when it comes to doing something I don’t want to do, I just don’t drink enough of the stuff because I don’t like it.
This topic actually came to light the other week when Ross and I were watching the gadget show, they were showing some ridiculously high tech toothbrushes… now I’m a bit of a teeth geek, I love a good smile!!! Anyways, I digress… These toothbrushes were unreal, they connected with an app on your phone and all kinds to analyse your brushing and, get this… it gives you advice on where you need to brush more, the problem areas, it tells you where you’re going too firm or if you’re completely missing bits… I was completely in awe despite the price tag which was a good few hundred pounds… I said to Ross, you know what, I bet there’s not many would pay that for a toothbrush despite the fact they’d save in the long term on dental fees and even for others who fear the dentist and avoid it at all costs. They wouldn’t pay it neither, despite the fact it could massively reduce the dreaded dental visit for a numb face when treatment is needed, so they pay a far greater cost in the loss of their teeth because they refuse to go to the dentist anyway through fear…
This sharp moved across to people who are overweight or unhappy with their bodies… gym memberships… nutrition plans… all kinds… Ross did point out through my ramblings that people are willing to pay for the quick fix, the juice plus type, have your eyes out and your pants down whilst counting your notes out, type quick fixes, but when it comes to investing into a gym membership or a coached program suddenly everyone is taken aback by how much it costs and they’d rather keep their money for anything BUT solving the root cause of why they are unhappy. They’d rather spend hundreds on clothes every time they outgrow their wardrobe, they’d rather spend the money on the food that makes them smile even if just for a moment but funnily enough is a major part of the problem, then they’ll keep complaining, keep getting upset, keep being drawn to the quick fix that never actually works in the long term… that money is wasted…
Mind you… in all honesty I can’t blame people for putting a bandage over their problems rather than sorting out the root cause of the problem… not when GP’s these days are offering out Gastric Bands like they’re sweets… they used to offer nutrition advice and discounted gym memberships… now they tell you not to exercise in case your knee or other issues get worse and then tell you they’ll stick you on the list to have a band fitted to your stomach via surgery to stop you over-eating (which might I add is temporary also, these fuckers stretch if you continue to gorge over time, it will loosen and then you’re back to square one).
Then you’ve got those who choose a gym purely on price… that’s sooooo wrong… do your research and find a gym that works for you, time slots, class types, approach to nutrition, everything. If I could recommend anything, unless you’re mega disciplined, pay for a program that’s fully coached, it’s all good and well paying pay as you go or £30 a month but that’s only good value and not a complete waste if you’re accountable and actually turn up!!!
At what point did we become so reluctant to address the problems we face head on rather than simply brushing them under the carpet, we being collective as myself and the other coaches here are all guilty of this at some point or another.
The phone charger is frayed, whack some tape on it, doesn’t matter if it burns the house down… Bit extreme but you catch my drift right???
It’s mental… we’re risking our lives and for what… to save or to feel like we’re saving some money? When in fact we’re probably not saving anything at all… or to save ourselves the initial pain of going through some sort of change. We’re probably losing out on something that’s so much more important and has so much more than monetary value. Like I said above, my migraines, I’m bedridden with them, I miss out on time with friends, family… When you’re overweight and can’t go to the park with the kids because you’re knackered, you’re setting an example to your kids who then get picked on at school because they’re overweight too because they’re copying off you…
When you miss out on nights out because you can’t find anything to wear and you don’t want to leave the house looking how you do, you lose your own self worth, you lose your self confidence… When you don’t wake up from that really straight forward operation and your kids lose their mum or dad… just take a minute to take that one in and breath… when you have a heart attack aged 40, when you lose your job because you’ve had to take so long off work, they’re itching for any which way to get you out so they no longer have to pay sick pay… when you lose your life far too early…
They always say when your young, prevention is better than cure, and it is, but I think we need to address the fact that finding the root cause and treating it is better than a plaster because sooner or later it gets ripped off and you’re in a worse state than before having probably suffered far, far greater costs.
Whatever the problem it is that you’re having, face it head on… it might be painful, it might be scary, you might feel initially that it’s something you’d far rather not be spending money on… but until you sort your shit out, it’s you’re only chance… prioritise, stop wasting money on shitty bandages, get to the root, do some work and enjoy the rest of your life!!! You’ll save far more in the long term…
Rant over… Think on it…
